                                                                   PROGRAM

 

Friday, October 24.  Bus trip.

9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  Depart from Hilton Garden Inn.  St. Martinville, 18 miles from Lafayette on Bayou Teche, in the heart of Cajun country. 11:00 a.m. Bus to Vermilionville for lunch and guided tours in the afternoon.  Return to hotel by 5:00 p.m.

 6:00-7:00 p.m.  Reception (Hilton Garden Inn – Evangeline Room)

 Dinner on one’s own.

 Saturday, October 25.  Conference (University of Louisiana/Lafayette – Evangeline Room)

8:00 - 8:40 a.m.             Registration - Continental breakfast (Included in conference registration),

8:40 - 9:00 a.m.             Welcome

9:00 - 9:50 a.m.             "Joseph Medard Carriere and the Ethnogenesis of French Identity." Ray Brassieur, U. of Louisiana-Lafayette.

 10:00 - l0: 50 a.m.          "Enlightenment in the Shade: Education in French Colonial Louisiana."  Emily Clark, Tulane University.

 11:00 - 11:50 a.m.          "Power, Sex, and Race in Colonial St. Louis." Carl Ekberg, Emeritus, Illinois State University.

 12:00 - 1:15 p.m.            Lunch – University’s Café de Lafayette (Included in conference registration)

 
1:15 - 2:05 p.m.             "The Natchez and the French: A Failed Encounter." Arnaud Balvay, independent historian, Paris. 

 2:15 - 3:05 p.m.             "French Colonial Architecture -- Some Trans-Atlantic Connections." Jay D. Edwards, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.

 3:15 - 3:45 p.m.             Panel discussion.  Chair and commentator: Stamos Metzidakis, Washington University-Saint Louis.

 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.             Annual Meeting and elections followed by a short Board meeting.

 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.             Cash bar and banquet (Hilton Garden Inn – Evangeline Room) Reservations required

 

Accommodations:       35 rooms have been reserved at the Hilton Garden Inn/Cajundome, 2350 W. Congress Street, Lafayette, LA 70506.  337-291-1977. $99.00 per room plus 12% tax. Deadline for CFCS reservations: 10/2/08. Mention the CFCS.
